El Nino and HIV Linkages in African Countries

This brief stresses the importance of El Niño response plans making appropriate linkages with HIV, ensuring risks are mitigated and addressed. The brief notes a 2014 study of 18 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Liberia and Sierra Leone, found that infection rates in HIV-endemic rural areas increased by 11 per cent for every recent drought.
